The work-study program is intended to assist those students who need financial aids. The on campus work-study program provide students with stipends to solve their financial problem and so they can concentrate and focus on their studies. This program was originated in 1955, started with the sympathy and love from the professors towards the students, the first Executive Council of Tunghai University had a resolution: Students must not cease learning for the reason of being unable to afford the tuition and fees. Despite all the changes in the higher education environment and the diversification of the society over the past half century, Tunghai University still upholds the spirit of Christ, and strives to continue the determination to assist students in need.
Every year, nearly 40 million NTD is used to support this system, and the number of students who applied for this program is more than 2,000 students. Students can apply through e-application. (http://tlabor.thu.edu.tw/00v2_loginA.php). The program is divided into four periods: summer vacation, the first semester, winter break, and the second semester. Students have to send their resume through the website, after that there will be an interview, which is fair and square to recruit students in the work-labor program. Students will be assigned to work in 8 colleges including 34 departments, and 17 administrative offices. Working content includes administrative secretarial-, receptional-, network managing-, and campus eco-friendly project related jobs. Compensation is determined by the number of working hours and the characteristics of the job.
Students can plan their working hours according to their time and study life, and so, students can learn to manage their time wisely at the same time. Other than that, the working attitude and working ethic are important too. Therefore, during the process of work-study program, students can also get the training on improving their employability and international perspective. These trainings and activities are very important experiences in students’ life. Students learn to be hardworking, responsible, confident, and able to provide high quality work. Moreover, students also understand the importance of being trustworthy by following rules, realize the value of money, and develop abilities to deal with different situations and authorities in the society.
In addition, tutors are assigned to lead the students in learning more about their working fields. The tutors help the students know and transform themselves, and make changes to prepare themselves in the future career. In each semester, tutors are also assigned to access students’ performance based on their punctuality, reliability, interpersonal relationship, working knowledge and etc. Whoever cannot reach the minimum standard, 70 points, will lose the qualification to apply for the program in the next semester. (For more information, please refer to “Labor Program Rules and Regulations”.)
The enforcement of the work-study program is an educational goal of the university and the maintenance counts on donations from the alumni and other community leaders. Through the program, students get to study without worrying about their financial problem by providing paid-services, and thus learn to be grateful. Gratitude and reciprocation are important values the labor-study program bring about. Take Tunghai University Work-Study Hygiene Assistant Team for example, it has contributed to the community with environmental cleaning, adopted children around the world, provided donations to the AIDS groups, and etc. The university has accumalated more than one hundred thousand NT dollars since year 2008. It is the best proof of implementing the spirit of the university’s work-study program. Through this practice and reciprocation, Tunghai University proudly won the “2013 National Social Education Community Award"!
